This 8 session course is designed for students who are beginners but comfortable with their machines
and creating simple projects. Each student will choose a pattern after the first class and should be able
to work independently between classes on their project. At the end of the eight week course you will
have completed a basic garment (skirt, camp shirt, etc) and will have learned the information needed
to continue independently with increasingly complex patterns. This course is not for those who are
unfamiliar with a sewing machine. Basic sewing machine use and skills are required.

Topics include:
Various fabrics, choosing fabric for project, knit vs woven, where and how to find, discuss what is
needed for class. Measuring for patterns vs ready to wear, fabrics-selvage and cross grain, showing and
explaining nap, one way design, pattern for project discussions, machine talk, parts and function of the
machine, threading, bobbing, stitching-marking and stay stitching, how to backstitch at end of seams
and WHY, pinning sections together, pressing as you sew, pleats review of design details, zippers insert
at least 2 zipper samples, waistbands, marking hem, buttons, buttonholes, hooks and eyes.
