New! Music in the Movies ...................................................................................................... $15

Wednesdays 10/7 & 10/14              5:30–6:30pm               Gardner 90895

Have you ever watched a movie and have heard a piece of music that makes you think “Where have I heard this before?” Or maybe, the music makes you feel like laughing, crying, or feeling like you can conquer the world? Chances are, what you are hearing is a popular work of classical music. This two-session course takes a deeper look into the music that makes your favorite movies great by examining what that musical selection is (part of a symphony, part of an opera, etc.), who wrote it, and what that piece’s background is. This course, we will focus on two works: Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries and Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. These are two works that you have most likely heard outside of the movie theater – commercials or TV shows.

Prior knowledge of the music or film is helpful, but not required – a movie clip featuring that particular piece of music will be shown at the start of class. No course materials required – handouts will be provided during each session. The goal of this course is for you, the student, to have a better understanding of the music that goes into your favorite movies, and maybe even start a life-long love of classical music!

*This Class has the potential to go online, due to COVID-19. We will reach out to registered students if this is necessary.
